How to choose
Disposable vs washable
Disposable underpads are convenient and hygienic — use once and throw away, no laundry — but you pay per use (roughly RM0.29–0.50 a piece in bulk here). Washable pads cost more upfront (RM32–37) but work out cheaper over months if you can launder them daily. Many families keep disposables for travel, day trips and worst nights, and a washable pad for routine home use.
Underpad and diaper do different jobs
An adult diaper is worn on the body; an underpad lies flat on the bed or chair as a second protective layer that catches leaks and protects the mattress. For a bedridden parent you usually use both — the diaper first, the underpad under the hips as backup.
Size and coverage
60×90 cm is the common default and covers the hip area for most adults. Go larger (80×90 cm or more) if the person moves a lot, is larger-framed, or you turn them frequently — more coverage means fewer missed leaks onto the sheet.
Absorbency and ply
Thicker, higher-ply pads (e.g. 5-ply) hold more and suit overnight or heavier incontinence; thinner pads are fine for daytime or light backup. If you see leaks reaching the sheet, move up a size or a ply before changing brand.
Common questions
What is the difference between an underpad and an adult diaper?
A diaper is worn on the body; an underpad is a flat pad that lies on the bed or chair as a protective layer under the person. They are used together for bedridden care — the diaper is the primary barrier and the underpad protects the mattress from any leaks.
Disposable or washable underpads — which is cheaper?
Washable pads are cheaper over months if you can launder them daily, because you reuse one RM32–37 pad instead of buying disposables at ~RM0.40 each every day. Disposables win on convenience, hygiene and travel. Many families use both.
Do underpads need MDA approval?
No. Like adult diapers, underpads are personal-care consumables, not registered medical devices, so MDA (Medical Device Authority) registration does not apply. MDA registration does matter for devices such as blood-pressure monitors, hospital beds and pressure-relief mattresses.
